A stress test, also called a cardiac stress test, measures the heart's ability to respond to external stress in a controlled clinical environment. A stress test usually involves walking on a treadmill while a patient's heart rhythm, blood pressure and breathing are being monitored. Stress tests assess blood flow to the heart and can be helpful in diagnosing many types of heart disease or irregularities.
Providers may recommend a stress test to:• Determine if chest pain or shortness of breath symptoms are related to issues in the heart.
• Identify abnormal heart rhythms.
• Help diagnose coronary artery disease.
• Evaluate or guide treatment of heart disorders.
