Bone Density / DEXA

Bone density scanning, also called DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) or bone densitometry, is an enhanced form of X-ray technology that uses very low amounts of radiation to measure minerals in the bone and identify bone density. When mineral content is high, bones are denser and stronger. Regular DEXA screenings can help catch bone demineralization before it reaches the point of osteopenia or osteoporosis and can predict the likelihood of an osteoporosis-related fracture.

DEXA scans are used to:

• Determine risk of bones fractures.
• Evaluate bone strength.
• Detect bone loss and diagnose other conditions found in the bones.
• Diagnose or identify risk of osteoporosis.
• Monitor effectiveness of osteoporosis treatments.
• Determine treatment plans or supplements for overall bone health.
