Technical Supervisor - Laboratory - CMC - Brookings
Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, the Technical Supervisor plans, manages and supervises the activities of a centralized laboratory and performs standard biological, microbiological, and chemical tests in all areas of medical laboratory to assure their delivery in an accurate and timely fashion using proper safety precautions. Demonstrate ability to function in all areas of the clinical laboratory including blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, urinalysis, and phlebotomy. Perform routine phlebotomy services as needed. Verify questionable results or samples and repeat procedure as necessary.

Maintains laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair.

Coordinates employee schedules, supervises employees, and provides guidance to establishing goals, objectives and measures. Maintains productivity by monitoring workload; identifying peak and slack periods; making operational or staffing adjustment. Must be accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed and provide consultation to resolve technical problems in according to policies and procedures established by the medical director or technical supervisor. Provides guidance while troubleshooting complex problems and act as a liaison between the staff Laboratory testing personnel and the rest of the Clinical Laboratory Leadership Team.
Maintains quality results by participating in the hospital quality assurance program; consulting with pathologists; performing proficiency surveys; reviewing quality control and quality assurance programs; making adjustments in policy and procedures; generating reports; maintaining records. Performs testing on patient specimens according to standard operating procedures as needed.
Serves as technical resource by participating in staff training; answering questions of other professionals; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
Maintains medical laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies. Perform testing on patient specimens according to standard operating procedures as needed.
Resolves technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the established performance specifications. Ensures that patient test results are not reported untill all corrective actions have been taken and test system is functioning correctly.
Responsible for the selection of test methology that is appropriate for the clinical use of the test results. Verifies the test procedures performed and establishment of the laboratory’s test performance characteristics, including precision and accuracy of the test and test system. Enrollment and participation in HHS approved proficiency testing program that is equivalent to the tests offered.
Performs other duties as assigned or requested to support the overall needs of the department, and in accordance with Curry Health Network’s Mission, Vision and Shared Values.

Minimum Education & Experience:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology/laboratory science or chemical, physical, biological science (MLT/CLT or MLS/MT/CLS) with ASCP or AMT certification.
Experience in an acute patient care environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to successfully and positively interact with providers and employees at all levels throughout the organization and the public.
The skills required for proper specimen collection, including patient preparation, if applicable, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation and storage of specimens.
Ability to commute between 3 campuses in Brookings, Gold Beach and Port Orford.
A working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.
The skills required to implement quality control policies and procedures of the laboratory.
An awareness of the factors that influence test results, and the skills required to assess and verify the validity of patient test results through the evaluation of quality control sample values prior to reporting patient test results.
